What are Hormones?
Hormones are essentially chemical messengers in your body. Produced by the endocrine glands (which are located all over your body), they are released directly into your bloodstream and tell your organs, skin, muscles and more what to do. Playing a huge role in many bodily functions, they coordinate and control many of your body’s main processes, including metabolism, reproduction, sleep and mood. From your body temperature to your hair growth, hormones have a part to play. That said, your body doesn’t always get it right, and many of us experience hormone imbalances at some stage in our lives.
Causes of Hormone Imbalance
A hormone imbalance is caused by having too much or too little of a particular hormone, or hormones, in your body. When this happens, your body can develop a range of symptoms, from the mild to the serious. Even small imbalances can have a big effect on the way your body functions and can consequently impact your health and your happiness. Women in particular can often experience hormonal imbalances at key stages in their lives, including around menstruation, puberty, pregnancy and menopause. However, lots of factors can lead to imbalances in both men and women, from medical conditions to lifestyle habits to environment and more. Even stress can have a big effect on hormones.
Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance
Depending on which hormone is out of balance, a wide array of symptoms can present themselves in the body. Just some of these can include infertility, fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, loss of libido, insomnia, hair loss and hot flushes.
Signs of Hormone Imbalance in Women
Hormones can naturally fluctuate in women throughout the monthly menstrual cycle, with some women experiencing more severe symptoms than others. Over time, hormone levels can also decrease or increase with age, making it hard to spot irregularities.
For women, some of the most common symptoms of hormone imbalance include:
- Hot flushes
- Irregular periods
- Pain during sex
- Vaginal dryness
- Excessive hair loss or gain
- Weight gain
- Low energy
- Anxiety/depression
- Headaches
- Acne
Oestrogen and the Body
Hormone tests are a brilliant way for you to take control of your body and understand what’s going on. As well as a number of hormones, one of the main hormones we look at is oestrogen. This is because oestrogen plays an important role in women’s health, from bone health to fertility to maintaining cholesterol.
In women, too high levels of oestrogen could mean:
- Hyperthyroidism
- Cirrhosis (liver damage)
- Tumours in the adrenal glands
- Higher risk of blood clots and strokes

From our clinic in Truro, Cornwall, we have developed simple-to-use blood tests to detect hormone imbalances in your body. Testing at Home
Believing that everyone has a right to understand their own body and access fast, accurate information, we have developed these personalised at-home tests to be as easy and accessible as possible. All you have to do is take a blood sample/finger prick from your finger and post this back to us from anywhere in the UK so we can analyse the results in our accredited lab. Our tests are suitable for both men and women.
Test Results
Once we have received your sample, you should typically receive your results within 3-5 business days via email. If you have any questions about your results, we can then advise you as to the next steps and provide private consultation if necessary.
Please note:
Test results may be affected by medication, supplements and hormone therapy. For women, results can also be affected by birth control pills and the natural menstrual cycle stage.
To read your FSH levels, menopause testing kits usually measure the follicle-stimulating hormone in your urine. FSH levels increase when you enter menopause and can rise and fall during a typical menstrual cycle.
